AMERICAN STREET PHOTOGRAPHY IN PARIS
We recently had a trip to Paris, decided to have a long 4 day weekend away & Paris was a good choice. Not too long a flight & not peak tourist season yet. My Last trip to Paris was more than 17 years ago. Paris has changed a lot. Buldings are still teh same & mostly as grand as they come. During our first walk aroudn the city, meandering, fortuitously we came across La Galerie Rouge. What a delight to see that the exhibition at the time was “American Street Photography” and not just to look around but also Prints for sale. In the front Gallery window was a gallery card with a photo by The Americal Photographer Jill Freedman who was close to our hearts. The “Street Photography” of six American Photographers was on Dispaly, Louis Faurer, Jill Freedman , Dave Heath, Danny Lyon, Joseph Sterling and Garry Winogrand. It was also delightful to see that the Gallery was busy & many people were viewing & chatting about Street Photography. It’s hopefull that Street Photography as a Genre is gathering interest as many Street Photographs of the 1950’s to Mid 1970’s are amongst some of most valuable & iconic Photographs of the genre. It’s also an encouragement to those young & up and coming folks interested in Street Photography.
And as Luck would have it, I took a shot of a Street Photographer right outside…. We didnt talk much
