ADDING MUSIC TO STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
I have recently been wondering about the merits of adding music ti Street Photography or Photography in General. One could even extend this to any image, fro example adding music to images of Sculpture or Paintings. It’s vast.
This is a phenomenon that to my knowledge, was introduced by INSTAGRAM or at least most popularised by instagram.
My thoughts are on the Street Photography Genre.
WHY YOU MIGHT ADD MUSIC TO STREET PHOTOGRAPHY?
Starting with all the FOR thoughts, some are of the view that adding music to Instagram Street Photography posts is and has become one of the most effective ways to capture attention and express personality, Mood & meaning. Music instantly sets a mood, whether it’s upbeat, nostalgic, dramatic, or calm, and helps viewers emotionally connect with the content in just a few second, after all, cinema, Film Makers have been using music for decades. In a fast-scrolling environment like Instagram, that emotional hook can be the difference between someone pausing on a post or scrolling past it.
And how do you decide which music to pick? Does the music one picks differ based on different momentary moods of the photographer? Can you choose the wrong music?
In General, one can argue that Music, also enhances storytelling. Music generates a feeling. A simple Street photo or short video can feel more meaningful when paired with the right song, allowing creators to communicate feelings that visuals alone might not fully convey. For brands and influencers, especially in advertising, music can reinforce identity and tone, making content more recognisable and memorable over time. Trending audio can also boost discoverability, as Instagram’s algorithm often favours posts that use popular or currently viral tracks, as I understand it.
Beyond reach and engagement, does music makes Street Photography feel more human? Relevant? Meaningful? It reflects taste, culture, and personality of the Street Photographer, believing that creators build stronger relationships with their audience. Whether it’s a favourite song, a trending sound, or a subtle instrumental track, music adds depth and energy to posts.
Overall, adding music transforms Instagram content from something that’s simply seen into something that’s felt, making the platform more dynamic and emotionally engaging. One might even argue that if you really really like the music, you are more likely to LIKE the Image!?

WHY A GREAT PHOTO DOES NOT NEED MUSIC ADDING TO IT ?
A great photo doesn’t need music because its power comes from stillness, from within. Strong composition, lighting, colour, and emotion, humour and ambiguity can speak for themselves without any added layers. When a Street Photography image is truly compelling, it invites the viewer to pause, interpret, and feel something on their own terms. Adding music can sometimes distract from that quiet impact or steer emotions in a direction the photo doesn’t need.
Photos also leave room for imagination. Without sound, viewers project their own memories, moods, and meanings onto the image, which can make the experience more personal. Music, by contrast, tells people how to feel, narrowing interpretation rather than opening it up. In that sense, silence becomes part of the storytelling.
There’s also a timeless quality to strong photography. A great photo can stand alone across platforms, contexts, and years, while music trends change quickly and may date the image. Relying on visual strength alone shows confidence in the craft and respects the viewer’s attention.
Ultimately, music should enhance content, not compensate for it. When a photo is already emotionally rich and visually complete, adding music isn’t necessary—it’s optional. The image has already done its job.

DOES VIEWING A STREET PHOTO WITH AND WITHOUT MUSIC, ENHANCE OR DIMINISH THE MEANING OR CONTEXT OF THE PHOTO?
Viewing a photo with and without added music can significantly change how its meaning or context is perceived. Music acts as an emotional guide: it can intensify certain feelings, suggest a narrative, or frame the image in a specific way. With music, a photo may feel more cinematic or dramatic, and the viewer is subtly directed toward a particular interpretation. In that sense, music can increase emotional impact, but it also narrows the range of meanings the viewer might otherwise explore.
Without music, a photo relies entirely on its visual elements—composition, subject, light, and expression. Isn’t that what a Street Photographer wants or prefers? This absence allows for openness. Viewers bring their own emotions, memories, and assumptions, which can make the experience more personal and varied. The meaning becomes less prescribed and more reflective, often deeper in a quiet, contemplative way.
Whether music increases or diminishes impact depends on intent. If the goal is storytelling or mood-setting, music can enhance context and immediacy. If the goal is ambiguity, timelessness, or visual purity, music may dilute the photo’s independent voice.
Ultimately, music doesn’t just add to a photo—it reshapes how it is read, felt, and understood.
Millions of people, now use music. At a very quick search, I heard NO music on images by:
Joel Meyerowitz
Martin Parr
Robert Frank
Vivian Maier
Bruce Gilden
Cartier Bresson
Elliott Erwitt
At the end, one could argue that it’s a personal choice. Is it subjective?
Do you ever hear music at a Photography Gallery?
I for one, having added music to a few Street Photography Photos, Will NOT do it again.
