Major New Street Photography Documentary Set To Release
Finally, after nearly a year of teasers, the feature-length street photography documentary, Fill The Frame, is ready for rental or purchase on Vimeo. This film, directed and produced by Hawaiian filmmaker Tim Huynh, features a cast of eight amateur New York City street photographers – Paul Kessel, Melissa O’Shaughnessy, Melissa Breyer, Mathias Wasik, Lauren Wells, Julia Gillard, Jonathan Higbee, and Dimitri Mellos.
Fill The Frame follows around the cast and gives the viewer a first-hand glimpse into how each photographer approaches their work. Why do these ordinary New Yorkers feel so compelled to hit the sidewalks with a camera day after day? Who has inspired them? What kind of work do they produce and what is its value? These are some of the questions that the film attempts to answer. Intertwined within the vignettes of these eight photographers are interviews with a number of master photographers, writers, and critics who help to situate their contemporary NYC street photography within the wider world (and historical context) of street photography more generally. Some of the experts interviewed include Richard Sandler, Jeff Mermelstein, Matt Weber, Meryl Meisler, and Michael Ernest Sweet. Author Colin Westerbeck and SFMoMA curator, Sandra Philips, also make appearances in the film. These experts refer to legendary photographers such as Gary Winogrand, Joel Meyerowitz, William Eggleston, and Helen Levitt, among others, to give context and value judgments on the work presented by the cast.
Fill The Frame is a must-see documentary for anyone interested in the world of street photography. The film both illuminates why so many people find this art form so fascinating, as well as the real issues facing the genre as we go forward. The film also helps to answer that big question, why some people hit the streets with a camera and then simply cannot give it up – be there work fantastic and iconic or pedestrian and unremarkable.
Fill The Frame is available for rental or purchase on Vimeo. The film is also screening at several prominent international film festivals throughout 2021. More info at FillTheFrameFilm.com.
